Warning Sirens Exist to Alert People Outdoors
Posted Date: 6/22/2012

Outdoor sirenOutdoor sirens will sound in Hennepin County for severe weather, including tornado warnings, severe thunderstorms and 70 mile per hour winds. Although many can hear the sirens from inside their homes, the sirens are designed to alert people outdoors to the danger of impending severe weather.

The destructive potential of severe weather can damage structures, topple trees and kill or injure people. “When the outdoor sirens sound, it is time to seek shelter,” said Deputy Police Chief Dan Plekkenpol.

Use a weather radio, or tune in to a local TV or radio station for severe weather information when indoors.

Hennepin County’s emergency manager has put together documents with essential information and frequently asked questions on outdoor warning sirens. Plymouth’s emergency preparedness information covers severe weather, along with suggestions for home disaster plans and other critical information to keep your family safe.
