Plymouth Fire Department Reminds Residents to Check Smoke Alarm Batteries
Posted Date: 11/1/2012

Change smoke detector batteriesWhen it’s time to "fall back" and change the clocks on Sun., Nov. 4, take a few minutes to check the batteries in all of your smoke alarms, too. It could save your life. A working smoke alarm cuts the chances of a person dying in a fire in half.

For the best protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside every sleeping area and in every bedroom. Smoke alarms should be mounted high on walls or ceilings and tested monthly.

It's important to replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year (twice is preferred), unless they contain ten-year lithium batteries. Even if your smoke alarms are hardwired to your home’s electrical power, replace the batteries in case of a power outage.

If an alarm “chirps,” warning that the battery is low, replace the battery right away. Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hardwired alarms, when they are 10 years old. Replace them sooner if they do not respond properly when tested.

If you need assistance reaching your smoke alarms, call the Plymouth Fire Department at 763-509-5198 to schedule a time for firefighters to visit your home and help you change the batteries.
